Reconstruction of Sea Surface Temperature Data based on the Sr/Ca of Porites Coral in Ambon Bay
Journal Title: Journal of Mathematical and Fundamental Sciences - Year 2016, Vol 48, Issue 2
Abstract
Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data can be used to understand oceanography dynamics in Ambon Bay. However, a lack of continual and long time series in-situ SST data limited this study. To overcome this problem, the Sr/Ca composition in Porites coral taken from Outer Ambon Bay was used to reconstruct SST. The coral sample was sub-sampled monthly and analyzed using ICP-OES. Subsequently, the anchor point method was used to develop the chronology of the coral Sr/Ca based on ERSST v3b data. The regression equation results were Sr/Ca = -0.059 x SST + 10.32 (r = -0.699, n = 95, p < 0.05). The reconstructed SST based on these results was verified by in-situ data from May to November 2008. The difference was found to be 1.2-2.5 °C (σ = 0.05%). This results lead us to conclude that coral Sr/Ca reflects SST variation in Ambon Bay well. Based on the reconstructed SST, we found that the SST in Ambon Bay experiences an extreme seasonal variation, which is highly correlated to air temperature, wind speed, and length of sun radiation. Ambon Bay also experiences SST anomalies in some periods, which are dominantly affected by local atmospheric conditions rather than ENSO phenomena.

Introduction of Interpolation and Extrapolation Model in Lanczos-type Algorithms A13/B6 and A13/B13 to Enhance their Stability
A new method to treat the inherent instability of Lanczos-type algorithms is introduced. It enables us to capture the properties of the sequence of iterates generated by a Lanczos-type algorithm by interpolating on this...
Local Fractional Operator for a One-Dimensional Coupled Burger Equation of Non-Integer Time Order Parameter
In this study, approximate solutions of a system of time-fractional coupled Burger equations were obtained by means of a local fractional operator (LFO) in the sense of the Caputo derivative. The LFO technique was built...
Enhanced Hydrogen Storage Capacity over Electro-synthesized HKUST-1
HKUST-1 [Cu3(1,3,5-BTC)2] (BTC = benzene-tri-carboxylate) was synthesized using an electrochemical method and tested for hydrogen storage. The obtained material showed a remarkably higher hydrogen uptake over reported HK...

On a Certain Subclass of Meromorphic Functions Defined by a New Linear Differential Operator
In this article, a new linear differential operator I^k (L_s^a (a_l,b_m )f(z)) is defined by using the Hadamard product of the q-hypergeometric function and a function related to the Hurwitz-Lerch zeta function. By using...
