Journal Title: Kocatepe Medical Journal - Year 2024, Vol 25, Issue 3
Abstract
OBJECTIVE: In our study, the effect of their circumcision experience on the anxiety level of healthcare professionals and their first-degree relatives, and what kind of effects on circumcision are reflected in their children were investigated based on their own circumcision experience. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our study was conducted at Afyonkarahisar Health Sciences University Hospital between April 1, 2023 and May 1, 2023 with healthcare professionals and their first-degree relatives. The study included 141 circumcised male participants. Participants were asked to fill out forms containing demographic data and questions regarding their own circumcision. Moreover; questions were asked about at what age, where, with what type of anesthesia and by whom he had his child circumcised, and whether bad experiences had an impact on the circumcision decision. The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) was used to measure the anxiety levels of the participants. RESULTS: The mean age of the study participants was 42.79±11.72 years. It was observed that the STAI state scores of the participants at university education level and those who did not have sexual dysfunction, and the whose STAI trait scores of those who were circumcised over the age of 6 were statistically significantly lower than the other groups (p<0.001, p=0.015, p=0.029, respectively). Participants with higher education levels preferred circumcision for their children in a health institution and by a doctor (respectively; p<0.001, p<0.001). All participants with complications or sexual dysfunction had their children circumcised by a doctor. Participants with bad experiences with circumcision; stated that they had their children circumcised by a doctor under general anesthesia in a health institution (p=0.007, p=0.034, p<0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: There is a change in the perspective and knowledge level of circumcision between generations. Higher education level, bad memory of circumcision, and the complications experienced affect the circumcision preferences of the parents in their descendants.
