Reflections of Middle School Teachers’ Professional Competency on Teaching with Lesson Study Model

Abstract
This study aims to investigate how secondary school math teachers’ professional competences are being reflected and to assess “Lesson Study” model. A qualitive approach was used in the study. The participants are three math teachers from a distinct area of one of the Turkey southern cities. Criterion sampling method has been used as a sampling choosing. A semi structure interview form has been used to collect data. Descriptive analysis was used for data analysis. There are affirmative findings about the professional competences of teaching math such as the importance of lesson preparing, considering the field requirements and improving students’ skill and then technology using is an integral part of teaching qualification. It is found that lesson study model has positive effect on professional development. Professional teaching skills such as sharing experience with each other and getting good communication with the fellow teachers. If the result of this study are examined, it can easily be seen using Lesson Study Model has affirmative effect on teachers’ vocational improvement and teachers’ professional competences can be reflected in their teaching. However, there are some negative findings about lesson study such as the participants had a problem with using technologic sources. To overcome this issue instead of attending a seminar lesson study model is recommended. Moreover, lesson study model can be applied other subject.
