REFRACTIVE ERRORS AMONG MEDICAL STUDENTS: A RISK FACTOR ASSESSMENT

Journal Title: International Journal of Basic and Applied Physiology - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

Various studies in Asian population demonstrate a dramatic rise in prevalence of refractive errors (RE) namely myopia in school and college students. This study explored the prevalence of refractive errors and the factors affecting their progression among the medical students in Gujarat, India. After assessment for refractive errors, students filled up a questionnaire regarding reading and other related habits. Students were grouped depending on absence or presence of refractive errors as group I and group II respectively. Group II students were further investigated regarding their age of detection of refractive errors, progression of refractive errors during school and after entering medical college and family history of refractive errors. Prevalence of refractive errors among Indian medical students was 59.16% which is slightly lower than other Asian population but higher than their Caucasian counterparts. Presence of family history was strongly associated with refractive error presence and its progression. Watching TV or computer/mobile phone use and reading in bright light and for long hours were not associated with any higher prevalence of refractive errors. Habits like computer/mobile/TV use and reading in very bright light might be taken care of especially in those with a family history in order to impede the onset and progression of refractive errors
