Refusal Strategies to Prevent Substance Abuse among Adolescents

Journal Title: International Journal of Nursing & Midwifery Research - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 2

Abstract

Being able to refuse requests from others is important. It may sound simple, but turning down an offer to use can be difficult; some people are very skilled and persuasive when offering drugs. Assertive refusal strategies are skills that allow you to be effective at saying no to drug or alcohol offers. The basic principles in effective refusal of drugs are: • Respond rapidly • Have good eye contact • Respond with a clear and firm “No” that does not leave the door open to future offers of drugs • Make the conversation brief • Leave the situation Practicing assertive refusal strategies will help you be more successful at saying “no” and abstaining from use
