Journal Title: FOLIA GEOGRAPHICA - Year 2011, Vol 53, Issue 2

Abstract

The presented paper follows several numbers of aims. After a brief introduction to the terminology, in the first part we will justify the meaning of research on regional disparities. In the second part, we will point to several methodological pitfalls of regional disparities analysis, with particular regard to the issue of the appropriate territorial division choice, the indicators selection and the integrated indicator construction. In the third part, we will examine the development of regional disparities in Slovakia in recent years, taking into account different models of territorial division inorder to eliminate the effect of the capital city. In the fourth part, through analysis of the selected financial instruments, we will examine whether the regional policy in Slovakia contributed to a slowdown of regional disparities increase, with particular regard to reducing its impact on West-East spatial po- larization in Slovakia.
