Regulation of LDL receptor expression by the effect of curcumin on sterol regulatory element pathway.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2006, Vol 58, Issue 4
Abstract
To investigate the molecular mechanisms of the effect of curcumin on up-regulation of LDL receptor expression, a sterol regulatory report system was established in Xenopus laevis oocytes by microinjection of a plasmid pLXRN-4SRE-fPA, in which green fluorescence protein (GFP) gene was constructed downstream from the sterol regulatory element-1 (SRE-1), in the nucleus of the oocytes. The oocytes were treated with different kinds of natural medicines: curcumin, tea polyphenols, tanshinone, ligustrazine, ginkgolide, astragalosides. The expression of GFP was induced only by curcumin. In addition, it was also proved that the curcumin can increase the expression of functional LDL receptors in human liver hepatoma cell line HepG2. In conclusion, curcumin may up-regulate the expression of LDL receptor by its effecton SRE pathway.

Isobolographic analysis of interactions among losigamone analog AO-620 and two conventional antiepileptic drugs.
In the present study, we investigated pharmacodynamic interactions among AO-620, a losigamone analog, and two conventional antiepileptic drugs, valproate (VPA) and phenobarbital (PB). Experiments were conducted in the ma...
Histamine-induced cyclic AMP formation in the chick hypothalamus: interaction with vasoactive intestinal peptide.
Effects of histamine (HA) on cyclic AMP production and its action upon the effects evoked by vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) were studied in the chick hypothalamus. HA (0.1-1000 muM) potently stimulated cyclic AMP fo...
Influence of chronic stress on brain corticosteroid receptors and HPA axis activity.
Background: Disruption of the glucocorticoid negative feedback system evoked in animals by chronic stress can be induced by downregulation of glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) in several brain regions. In the present study,...
Study of the interaction of glutamatergic and nitrergic signalling in conditions of the experimental airways hyperreactivity.
Background: Glutamatergic and nitrergic system participate in the control of respiratory system functions. It is only little information regarding a possible interaction of both systems in the airways hyperractivity. We...
Hyperglycemia enhances the inhibitory effect of mitochondrial toxins and D,L-homocysteine on the brain production of kynurenic acid.
We have evaluated the effect of diabetes-mimicking conditions on the inhibition of kynurenic acid (KYNA) production exerted by mitochondrial toxins: 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NPA) and aminooxyacetic acid (AOAA), by endoge...
