Regulation of LDL receptor expression by the effect of curcumin on sterol regulatory element pathway.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2006, Vol 58, Issue 4
Abstract
To investigate the molecular mechanisms of the effect of curcumin on up-regulation of LDL receptor expression, a sterol regulatory report system was established in Xenopus laevis oocytes by microinjection of a plasmid pLXRN-4SRE-fPA, in which green fluorescence protein (GFP) gene was constructed downstream from the sterol regulatory element-1 (SRE-1), in the nucleus of the oocytes. The oocytes were treated with different kinds of natural medicines: curcumin, tea polyphenols, tanshinone, ligustrazine, ginkgolide, astragalosides. The expression of GFP was induced only by curcumin. In addition, it was also proved that the curcumin can increase the expression of functional LDL receptors in human liver hepatoma cell line HepG2. In conclusion, curcumin may up-regulate the expression of LDL receptor by its effecton SRE pathway.

Effect of chronic apocynin treatment on nitric oxide and reactive oxygen species production in borderline and spontaneous hypertension.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of NAD(P)H oxidase inhibitor - apocynin (4-hydroxy-3-methoxyacetophenone) on the increase of systolic blood pressure (SBP) in borderline (BHR) and spontaneously hyp...
Stress-opioid interactions: a comparison of morphine and methadone.
The utility of methadone and morphine for analgesia and of methadone for substitution therapy for heroin addiction is a consequence of these drugs acting as opioid receptor agonists. We compared the cataleptogenic and ant...
Effects of different priming doses of fentanyl on fentanyl-induced cough: a double-blind, randomized, controlled study.
Background: Fentanyl-induced cough is not an uncommon phenomenon during the induction of general anesthesia. A preliminary randomized controlled study was designed to observe the effects of different priming doses of fen...
In vivo and in vitro evaluation of the estrogenic properties of the 17β-(butylamino)-1,3,5(10)-estratrien-3-ol (buame) related to 17β-estradiol.
Background: Buame [17β-(butylamino)-1,3,5(10)-estratrien-3-ol] possesses anticoagulant and antiplatelet activities that are potentially antithrombotic. Since its estrogenicity is unknown, it was evaluated by established...
Inhibitory effect of albendazole and its metabolites on cytochromes P450 activities in rat and mouflon in vitro.
Cytochromes P450 (CYP) belong to the most important biotransformation enzymes, therefore, their inhibition may lead to serious pharmacological and toxicological consequences. Albendazole (ABZ) is a benzimidazole anthelmi...
