Rehabilitation of patients following orthopedic and surgical-orthopedic treatment of mandibular fractures – preliminary report

Abstract
21st century is characterized by the rapid development of all industries, including the automotive industry.Together with that we are witnessing an increase in the pace of life,resulting in increased injuries due to the speed and trafic accidents. Young people looking for attractions often get onvolved in conflicts, or undertake risk to impress their peers. As a result, traumatology is expanding into an extensive branch of medicine and fractures in the mandible area represent a growing percentage of injuries. The aim of the study was to assess the value of physiotherapy as tool in stepping up return of function of the masticatory system in case of patients who had undergone orthopedic surgical treatment of mandibular fractures, and the introduction of physioterapy as a standard in the treatment of patients with mandible fractures. The study included a group of 20 patients aged 18-60 years, who suffered mandible fractures as a result of an injury. Patients were diagnosed and treated in the Clinical Department of Cranio-Maxillo-Facial Surgery and Oncology at Norbert Barlicki University Teaching Hospital No 1 in Lodz. The results showed significant differences between patients who had undergone physiotherapy treatment after mandible fracture and those who have not expressed a wish to participate in it. Those differences were visible already one week after the introduction of physiotherapy and an element of manual therapy. This allowed to draw the conclusion that the problems of patients who are immobilized as a result of the mandible fracture are significant and should be the starting point for developing an appropriate physiotherapeutic for those patients.It would be also recommended to popularize physiotherapy as a standard treatment in such cases.
