Relación entre mortalidad y neumonía asociada al ventilador en pacientes de terapia intensiva

Journal Title: Ciencia Ecuador - Year 2021, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

AbstractIntroduction:ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is the main infection acquired in intensive care units (ICU); it is considered to be a lower respiratory tract infection that occurs in patients with orotracheal intubation or tracheostomy, and which was not present (or in the incubation period) at the time of intubation. It represents an important cause of mortality and increased length of stay in the ICU. The aim of the present study is to give a brief overview of the incidence of VAP in an ICU. Materials and methods:an observational, descriptive, retrospective, non-experimental, retrospective study was carried out on the basis of the medical records of patients admitted to the ICU at the "Francisco Javier Muñiz" Infectious Diseases Hospital in the city of Buenos Aires from January to December 2014, after which the information was processed using a spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel™). Results:data from 323 patients attended in the ICU were analysed, of which 115 (35.6 %) required invasive ventilatory support, and 25 (7.74 %) developed VAP. Mortality was 76 % in patients with VAP. The comorbidity associated with the highest mortality was HIV infection [73.68 %], followed by COPD [26.32 %]. Conclusions:VAP was found to have a high mortality rate of 76 % in the present study.
