Relationship Between Interpersonal Cognitive Distortions and Traumatic Stress, Depression and Hopelessness Levels of Women Staying in Shelters and Exposed to Violence

Abstract

Objective: It is known that some psychological problems are related with cognitive distortions. This research’s aim is to find relationship between interpersonal cognitive distortions and traumatic stress, depression and hopelessness levels of women staying in shelters and exposed to violence. Methods: In this study 79 women staying in three shelters in İstanbul and Kocaeli were interviewed. Cognitive Distortions on Relationships Scale, Instrument for Traumatic Stress, Beck Depression Scale, Beck Hopelessness Scale and Socio-Demographic Information Form were fulfilled in the interview. Descriptive statistical methods, Mann Whitney U, Spearman Correlation Test and Logistic Regression were used to analyze the data. Results: Results of the study show that participants’ education level is correlated with interpersonal cognitive distortions and its all subscales and also residence time is correlated with unrealistic relationship expectations and mind reading subscales of interpersonal cognitive distortions. Women who couldn’t take their children in spite of they wanted to, has higher levels of interpersonal cognitive distortions and mind reading distortions compared to other women. Interpersonal cognitive distortions with its all subscales are significantly correlated with traumatic stress, depression and hopelessness levels. Traumatic stress level had predictive power for the interpersonal cognitive distortions. Conclusion: It seems that interpersonal cognitive distortions are directly correlated to traumatic stress. As traumatic stress can increase the interpersonal cognitive distortions, also cognitive distortions can increase the severity of traumatic stress symptoms.
