Relationship between patience as a character strength and psychological wellbeing

Journal Title: The Journal of Happiness and Well-Being - Year 2017, Vol 5, Issue 1

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between patience and psychological well-being. Selected by random sampling, participants were 1007 individuals (427 males, 580 females) who were between the ages of 15 and 65+ living in Erzincan, Erzurum, Isparta and Fatsa. During the application process of this research, the Patience Scale and the Psychological Well-being Scale were used. In order to analyze the obtained data, t- test, Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Analysis and Regression Analysis were used. As a result of the research, it was seen that there was a meaningful positive relationship among total patience score, short-term patience / daily hassles, long-term patience / life hardships and interpersonal patience with psychological well-being. The dimension of interpersonal patience was associated more strongly with all dimensions of psychological well-being. The dimension “autonomy” of psychological wellbeing was associated more strongly with total patience score. Moreover, the weakest relation of total patience was with the dimension “purpose in life” of psychological well-being. Furthermore psychological well-being was a significant predictor of patience.
