Relationship of Death Awareness, Spiritual Wellbeing and Geriatric Nursing Performance in Nursing College

Journal Title: Journal of Biomedical Engineering and Medical Imaging - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 6

Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the death awareness, spiritual wellbeing and geriatric nursing performance of nursing college students and influential factors for their geriatric nursing performance. Method: The subjects in this study were 199 selected nursing students from three colleges in metropolitan cities including Seoul. A survey was conducted from March 5 to June 10, 2017, with self-report questionnaires. SPSS 23.0 for Windows was employed to analyze the collected data, and descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson correlation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression analysis were used. Results: Death awareness was positively correlated with spiritual wellbeing(.321, p<.001) and it also was positively correlated with geriatric nursing performance (.290, p<.001). The spiritual wellbeing of the nursing college students had a positive correlation with their geriatric nursing performance as well(.258, p<.001). As a result of making a regression analysis, death awareness(β=1.522, p<.001) exercised a positive influence on geriatric nursing performance, and spiritual wellbeing(β=.659, p=.011) also had a positive impact on geriatric nursing performance. As for the influence of death awareness and spiritual wellbeing on geriatric nursing performance, the former two variables had a 11.5% explainability on the latter. Conclusion: The development and application of efficient programs seem necessary to boost the geriatric nursing performance of nursing college students. And how to improve their positive death awareness and understanding of spiritual nursing should carefully be devised, or curriculum reorganization seems required to offer a new course on death awareness and spiritual nursing.
