Relationships between bruxism and tooth wear index in patients with advanced tooth wear

Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2016, Vol 66, Issue 3

Abstract

Aim of the study. Advanced tooth wear is a phenomenon of different etiology. The aim of the study was to investigate whether bruxism might exert an impact on the quality of tooth wear.Material and methods. The study was carried out on a group of 50 subjects (16 women and 34 men; mean age, 49.5 ± 9 years) with advanced tooth wear. The control group consisted of 20 subjects (8 women and 12 men; mean age, 48.5 ± 6 years) without signs of tooth wear. Tooth wear was evaluated according to the Smith and Knight index (TWI). The awarness of bruxism and its activity, as well as the parafunction of masticatory system was also surveyed.Results. Tooth wear index for occlusal surfaces and incisal edges was considerably different in patients with advanced tooth wear, compared with the control group (2.27 ± 0.52 vs. 0.83 ± 0.36, p<0.000). There was no significant correlation between TWI and bruxism self-awareness or between TWI and positive responses to questions concerning bruxism activity.Conclusion. The study showed that bruxism may intensify the pathologic tooth wear process, but it cannot be regarded as a causative factor in its advanced stage.
