Reliability of the calculated maximal lactate steady state in amateur cyclists
Journal Title: Biology of Sport - Year 2015, Vol 32, Issue 2
Abstract
Complex performance diagnostics in sports medicine should contain maximal aerobic and maximal anaerobic performance. The requirements on appropriate stress protocols are high. To validate a test protocol quality criteria like objectivity and reliability are necessary. Therefore, the present study was performed in intention to analyze the reliability of maximal lactate production rate (VLa[sub]max[/sub]) by using a sprint test, maximum oxygen consumption (VO[sub]2[/sub][sub]max[/sub]) by using a ramp test and, based on these data, resulting power in calculated maximum lactate-steady-state (PMLSS) especially for amateur cyclists. All subjects (n=23, age 26 ± 4 years) were leisure cyclists. At three different days they completed first a sprint test to approximate VLa[sub]max[/sub]. After 60 min of recreation time a ramp test to assess VO[sub]2[/sub][sub]max[/sub] was performed. The results of VLa[sub]max[/sub]-test and VO[sub]2max[/sub]-test and the body weight were used to calculate PMLSS for all subjects. The intra class correlation (ICC) for VLa[sub]max[/sub] and VO2[sub]max[/sub] was 0.904 and 0.987, respectively, coefficient of variation (CV) was 6.3 % and 2.1 %, respectively. Between the measurements the reliable change index of 0.11 mmol∙l[sup]-1[/sup]∙s[sup]-1[/sup] for VLa[sub]max[/sub] and 3.3 ml∙kg[sup]-1[/sup]∙min[sup]-1[/sup] for VO[sub]2[/sub][sub]max[/sub] achieved significance. The mean of the calculated PMLSS was 237 ± 72 W with an RCI of 9 W and reached with ICC = 0.985 a very high reliability. Both metabolic performance tests and the calculated PMLSS are reliable for leisure cyclists

THE EFFECTS OF THREE DIFFERENT REAR KNEE ANGLES ON KINEMATICS IN THE SPRINT START
The purpose of this study was to investigate the rear knee angle range in the set position that allows sprinters to reach greater propulsion on the rear block during the sprint start. Eleven university-track team sprinte...
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BLOOD LACTATE AND HYPERVENTILATION DURING HIGH-INTENSITY CONSTANT-LOAD EXERCISE IN HEAT
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between hyperventilation and increase in blood lactate during high-intensity constant-load exercise in heat and normal conditions. Seven male volunteers exercised...
Effects of different frequencies of whole body vibration on muscular performance
The effects of different frequencies (20, 30, and 40Hz) of whole body vibration were analyzed in order to determine which one of them is the most effective for muscular performance training. Thirty-one subjects participa...

The aim of the present study was to estimate differences in the cognitive-motivational parameters of women presenting with dissimilar cultural patters of “mascuality” which are associated with psychophysical costs of the...
HIGH-INTENSITY EXERCISE TRAINING INDUCES MORPHOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL CHANGES IN SKELETAL MUSCLES
In the present study we investigated the effect of two different exercise protocols on fibre composition and metabolism of two specific muscles of mice: the quadriceps and the gastrocnemius. Mice were run daily on a moto...
