Abstract

This article analyzes reminiscences in the surrealist poems of the English and American poets. Reminiscence is regarded as one of the key concepts of the phenomenon of intermediality which appeared in late XX century and focused on the specics of intra-connections of literary texts and works of art, their dialogue as different semiotic systems. Reminiscence is described as reference to previous cultural and historical facts, works of literature or art, their authors. Reminiscence can act as means of an artistic image creation, as an element of irony, criticism of the previous cultural tradition it can emphasize the profound essence of the literary texts’ conflicts or the twists and turns of the plot. The author also draws attention to the principles of French surrealism and states that surrealistic image, which combines rather remote realities, is the best means to achieve the unity of the conscious and unconscious in a surreal work. The article focuses on the key characteristics of the prominent French artists and regards the influence of their paintings on the poetry of the US and UK authors. It analyses surrealistic poems of British poet David Gascoyne and American poet Philip Lamantia, studies the extension of the principles of French surrealism onto their work and denes the linguistic dominants of the surrealistic poetry written in the English language.
