Rendemen, gel strength and viscosity of red algae Kappaphycus alvarizii (Doty) in Minahasa Peninsula
Journal Title: Journal of Biodiversity and Environmental Sciences (JBES) - Year 2015, Vol 7, Issue 6
Abstract
Seaweed Kappaphycus alvarezii is member of red algae (Rhodophyta) largely cultivated that is a carrageenan source highly needed in various industries worldwide. This study was aimed at knowing the rendemen, the gel strength and the gel viscosity of the carrageen production from K. alvarezii farming sites in Minahasa penninsula. Samples were collected from 4 regencies and extracted for carrageenan analysis and its physical properties. Results showed that the highest rendemen, 55.31%, was found in the product of Sondaken, South Minahasa, followed by Buku Tengah, Southeast Minahasa, 47.04%, Tumpaan, Minahasa, 39.62%, and the lowest in Jayakarsa, North Minahasa, 30.94%. The highest gel strength was recorded in the product of Buku Tengah, 1,391 g, followed by Tumpaan, 1,113 g, Jayakarsa, 626 g, and the lowest in Sondaken, 557 g. The highest viscocity was found in the product of Buku Tengah, 60 cps, then Sondaken 50 cps, Likupang, 40 cps, and Tumpaan, 30 cps, respectively. The highest rendemen occurred in the water with temperature range of 28.4 – 29.9oC and pH of 8.14 – 8.15. The highest gel strength was found in thw water with nitrate concentration range of 0.1-0.2 gr/cm2 , the highest viscosity in salinity range of 29.1 – 29.7 ppm. Carrageenan quality was highly dependent upon the interactions among water quality parameters and the supporting seaweed K. alvarezii farming site for optimal nutrient absorption around its habitat.

Effect of temperature on the Biology of Harmonia Dimidiata FAB. (COLEOPTERA: COCCINELLIDAE) Reared on scizaphus graminum (ROND.) Aphid
The influence of five constant temperatures (16±1°C, 20±1°C, 24±1°C, 28 ±1°C and 32 ±1°C) on the biology and prey consumption of larvae, adult male and female beetles of the ladybeetle, Harmonia dimidiata (Fab.), (Cocc...
Presence of predatory nematode (Nematoda, Mononchidae) in a Wilson’s storm petrel nest, Oceanites oceanicus (Ave, Procellariiformes, Hydrobatidae), in Southern Shetland Islands, Antarctica
The discovery of a mononchid nematode in the Argentinean Antarctic turns out to be a first citation of this predatory nematode in a Wilson’s storm petrel nest. In that nest there were dead young petrels that we deduced f...
Revision of vespid Wasps (Hymenoptera; Vespidae) in Iraq
A key to the recognized subfamilies and genera of Vespidae that collected in current investigations from different localities of Iraq are presented. A total of 10 species are recorded: Eumenes pomiformis (Fabricius), Ody...
Sugar and anthocyanin characterization of four Iranian pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) varieties using HPLC System
Among all types of fruit, pomegranate has been known as an excellent fruit due to its high valued nutraceutical components; i.e. anthocyanins, phenolic compounds and organic acids. This research aimed to measure anthoc...
Effect of salinity stress on some physiological traits of spring rapeseed genotypes at seedling stage
To study the effects of salinity on rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) and clear the role of K+ and Na+ in salt stress tolerance, an experiment was carried out in three salinity levels (0, 150 and 300 mM) and 16 genotypes with...
