Tuberculosis is an infectious disease with chronic evolution caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and remains as one of the most worrisome problems of public health worldwide. This research aimed to investigate the incidence of tuberculosis in the population of the city of Bom Jesus do Itabapoana, Province of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, using the database of the Brazilian Notification Disease Information System – SINAN. In the studied period, 46 cases of tuberculosis were reported. The average incidence rate of tuberculosis in the city of Bom Jesus do Itabapoana for the five years of the research was 25,96 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants with a declining trend. There is a predominance of tuberculosis cases in men (59.7%), and it can be highlighted that in 2015 and 2016 there were no cases recorded for women. The age class between 40 and 49 years is the most affected (23.91%). It is not possible to determine during the study period a statistical relationship between tuberculosis cases and co-infection with HIV. The dominant clinical form in all years was the pulmonary form of the disease (86.96%). Preventive and treating programs should be strengthened in order to eradicate tuberculosis in the population of the city in a short period.
