Research and conservation of the Black Stork Ciconia nigra (L.) in Ukraine

Journal Title: Roczniki Bieszczadzkie - Year 2012, Vol 20, Issue 1

Abstract

The overall number of population of the Black Stork in Ukraine is close to 800 nesting pairs. 150 breeding pairs of the Black Stork inhabit Carpathian region, whereas 650 breeding pairs inhabit Ukrainian Polissya. Breeding density is from 1.1 to 2 breeding pairs per 100 km2 of forest area in different regions. If we assume that the density of the nesting of the Black Stork in unstudied area is the same as in already studied, the overall number of population of the Black Stork in Ukraine might be close to 1000 nesting pairs. Increasing of the quantity of the Black Stork in Ukraine is a result of the some reasons, but first of all because this species good adaptation to anthropogenic pressure upon forest ecosystems. Other reason of number increase of the population is that Black Stork reacts well to the conservation measures. The creation of the conservation areas around nests, realization of biotechnical events for conservation of the Black Stork and conducting of the educational programs for pupils and foresters have been recommended.
