Journal Title: Journal of Henan Agricultural University - Year 2023, Vol 57, Issue 5

Abstract

[Objective] This study aims to investigate visitor activity patterns in the boundary space of the urban parks and the relationship between the boundary space features and spatial vitality through on-site observation of three representative comprehensive parks in Zhengzhou City. [Method] Based on the investigation of vitality indicators such as visitor density, activity types, activity times, diversity of age group and the satisfaction of visitors to quantify data, the viability value was obtained by statistical analysis and coefficient of variation analysis of the indexes of viability; Field measurement was conducted and the component indicators of the vitality were analyzed to obtain the specific values of various elements. The evaluation method of the spatial vitality was used to determine the key factors associated with the vitality of park boundary space and visitors’ needs in the boundary space of the urban parks. [Result] The spatial vitality of boundary space of each park varies across time and space, with the overall number of visitors of the parks on weekends significantly higher than that on weekdays. Children, middle-aged adults, and the elderly were the primary users of the boundary space of the park, and spatial preferences differed by age group. In addition, spatial vitality was influenced by the location of and the facilities in the park, and sites with more service facilities in the boundary space of the parks had a higher spatial vitality. However, the spatial vitality of the park’s boundary space was not directly proportional to its size and the number of visitors. [Conclusion] Through the analysis of the influencing factors of spatial vitality of the boundary space of the three comprehensive parks, it was found that the entrance density, boundary form, plant community structure and seat density had significant effects on the vitality of the boundary space. In order to increase the vitality of the boundary space of urban parks, factors that need to be considered include the location and size of the park, the green coverage and the allocation form of the plants, facilities of the park’s boundary space and so on.
