Research progress of the role of NAD + in sulfur mustard poisoning
Journal Title: Journal of Air Force Medical University - Year 2023, Vol 44, Issue 3
Abstract
Sulfur mustard (SM), as a classic erosive chemical agent, has caused a large number of casualties and is still a potential threat. SM can cause damage to multiple organs and systems such as skin, eyes, and respiratory system. The mechanism of SM poisoning is unclear, and there is no specific treatment drug. This paper reviews the recent research progress on nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD + ) and SM poisoning, introduces the synthesis and biological function of NAD + in vivo, and elucidates the phenomenon and mechanism behind SM-induced reduction of NAD + in cells. In particular, the role of NAD + in SM-induced toxic injury is analyzed from three aspects: overactivation of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase 1, inhibition of silent information regulator 1, and induction of oxidative stress. Moreover, the research progress of NAD + precursor drugs in the treatment of SM poisoning is discussed, aiming at providing new ideas for the mechanism of SM poisoning and the development of therapeutic drugs.
