RESISTANCE OF RZESZÓW REGION’S SOCIETY IN RELATION TO THE ACTIONS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF RELIGION

Journal Title: Studia z Prawa Wyznaniowego - Year 2010, Vol 13, Issue 13

Abstract

After World War II the government in Poland was overtaken by the communist party. Based on ideology of Marxism–Leninism, the communists had engaged in a fight against the Roman Catholic Church in order to destroy it. One of the used methods was to eliminate religion from public life and to root it out of Polish hearts. In order to achieve this goal, the Party had established several political bodies and adjusted the law to cover the necessary actions. The main role in that activity was delegated to the Office of Religion and the organs of state administration in the regions. Although, the Office had not established the religion policies, it had implemented the instructions of the Political Office of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers' Party. Comparing the law of that time (established by the communists and adjusted to the current political demands) to the unpublished, often secret or confidential documents of the Rzeszów Department of Religion and the communist party’s instructions, the article presents the cases of the Department’s violation of the constitutional principles such as: freedom of conscience, freedom of religion and freedom of celebrating religious ceremonies. The article shows also several examples of the Rzeszów society’s resistance to implementation the Department’s regulations ordering elimination of religion from schools and religious symbols from classrooms, hospitals and other public places. The main part of the article focuses on presenting and discussing the case studies from the documents of the Religion Department of State Archives in Rzeszów.
