Journal Title: International Journal of Medical Science and Innovative Research (IJMSIR) - Year 2018, Vol 3, Issue 10
Abstract
Objectives: The article deals with the study and characteristics of anxiety level of the first-year students, who during their studies at higher medical educational institution experience lasting mental and psycho-emotional load. The objective of the work is to determine the levels of situational and personality anxiety of the first-year foreign students at the medical university. Methods: To achieve the purpose 86 first-year students of the Higher State Educational Establishment of Ukraine “Bukovinian State Medical University” were surveyed by means of a questionnaire. The Spielberger State–Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) in the modification by Y.L. Khanin was used in our study to assess anxiety. Results: The majority of English-speaking students was found to have a high anxiety level (67,1% out of general amount of respondents). High anxiety decreases considerably the efficacy of intellectual activity, produced a negative impact on interpersonal communication, is associated with the signs of inadequate psycho-emotional strain and irritation, and can lead to emotional stress. Mean values of a high level of situational anxiety were found to be 51,4±0,54 points which is indicative of the fact that rather often students experience reactive anxiety and agitation waiting for a negative assessment or attitude to them. Conclusion: Considering the fact that the majority of students demonstrate higher level of anxiety that can have a negative effect on psychological health of students, certain conditions should be created at higher educational institutions in order to improve the process of adaptation, especially during the first years of studies.
