RETINOBLASTOMA- OUR EXPERIENCE OF INITIAL PRESENTATION ON ULTRASONOGRAPHY

Journal Title: Journal of Evidence Based Medicine and Healthcare - Year 2019, Vol 6, Issue 12

Abstract

BACKGROUND Vision is one of the most important components of the human sensory system. Retinoblastoma is the most common cancer of the eye in children, commonly seen below 5 years of age. We aimed to study the initial presentation of retinoblastoma at our institute. We have had studied several features like age, sex, size, multiplicity, echogenicity, presence of calcification, extraocular extension, and distant metastasis of retinoblastoma at out institute. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed our database of all patients presented with retinoblastoma or diagnosed as retinoblastoma, who came to our institute between 2005 to 2015. Inclusion criteria for this study included all patients who either presented as diagnosed case of retinoblastoma or patients diagnosed as retinoblastoma at our institute. All patients whose USG images were not available to us were excluded from the study. Patients who had taken treatment of retinoblastoma were excluded from study. RESULTS A study of 82 patients was done retrospectively. Maximum cases were found in 3-5 years age group with mild female predominance. On Ultrasonography (USG), most common feature found hypoechoic mass lesion with internal calcification. Hypoechoic mass lesion without calcification is becoming the diagnostic feature in early presentation. Presence of metastasis on initial presentation is rarely seen. CONCLUSION Ultrasonography is a very useful diagnostic tool for diagnosis of retinoblastoma and detection of intraocular calcification. Retinoblastoma can be diagnosed earlier with relatively small size of lesion with the help of USG further improving the scope for survival and salvage of the eye.
