Rhythm ability in terms of theoretical assumptions and 400 m race practice
Journal Title: Rozprawy Naukowe Akademii Wychowania Fizycznego we Wrocławiu - Year 2007, Vol 25, Issue 1
Abstract
Rhythm ability is a vital component of a coordination structure in numerous sports disciplines. Rhythm becomes important in one of the most complex athletic disciplines – the 400 m hurdle race. In scope of motor abilities, rhythm is described by such adjectives as repetitive, cyclic, fluent or phase-like. Similar attributes define the hurdle race in which there are cycles of particular fragments, repetitiveness of running between the hurdles and fluent overtaking the obstacles. The study was an attempt at identifying elements of the 400 m hurdle race rhythm. As a basis, repetitive parts of the race, separating particular hurdles, were taken (the so-called rhythmic units). Then changes in their spatial structure were described (number of steps between the hurdles) as well as time structure (split time). The analysis comprised the data of one hundred and twenty 400 m hurdle races of men at the finals of the major international sports events like Olympic Games, World Championships, European Championships from 1968–2004. Besides, basic parameters of somatic build and anaerobic abilities assessed with their times in the 400 m race were employed. Assuming that the champions adopt the optimum race rhythm, one may state that it is characterized by a steady lowering of the race speed, a distinct change in the number of steps in the third part of the race and a slight increase in their frequency after the seventh hurdle. While searching an adequate definition of rhythm in the 400 m hurdle race, it is advisable to focus on the magnitude of those changes and their proportions instead of concentrating on the attributes of repetitiveness or cycles.
