Abstract

The diagnosis of cancer is always a traumatic experience, both emotionally and physic ally. Patients with breast cancer feel a strong fear that unable proper healing process and rehabilitation. Often, depressed mood may result in changes in mental and social functioning. Mastectomy is often necessary despite the development of medicine. Mastectomy causes changes in women's body shape, which lead to psychological functioning changes. The aim of the study was to determine whether women who are diagnosed with breast cancer have different levels of anxiety, depression and the type of adaptation to illness depending on the type of surgery. The research showed no significant differences between female patients after radical treatment of breast cancer and female patients after breast-saving surgery. Half of the surveyed women had depressed mood, most of patients reported medium and high level of anxiety and a tendency to use active forms of coping With the illness.
