ROLE OF ORTHOTIC DEVICES IN EARLY REHABILITATION IN POST TRAUMATIC PARAPLEGIC PATIENT

Abstract

Background Rehabilitation of Paraplegic Patient in INDIA is quite neglected ,It is confined to wheelchair rehabilitation, Nursing care in bed leads to many morbidity like - bed sores, venous stasis , respiratory and other complications leading to morbidity and early mortality. Therefore, this study was carried out on the principles of early rehabilitation and mobilization with the help of orthotic devices to overcome the complications of bedridden and the boost up morale of patient and family for overall rehabilitation. Material & Methods In this study total 28 patients are included those who are suffering from post traumatic paraplegia. Patient included from July-2011 to Sep-2014 attending artificial limb fitting centre M Y Hospital Indore for orthotic devices like- HKAFO with Spinal Jacket, HKAFO, KAFO , AFO etc . Functional evaluation was done on the basis of modified Barthel index before Orthotic device given and after 1 month of Orthotic prescription and training. Results Functional gain attain by patient with early rehabilitation with orthotic devices were greater than expected, promising and encouraging to patient, family and society. There was an improvement of overall medical function and psychological outcome. It reduced complication of bed riddance like – bed sores, venous stasis, respiratory complication, morbidity and mortality as well. Conclusion Early rehabilitation of post traumatic paraplegic patient with the help of orthotic device improves the overall functional outcome.
