Role of selective percutaneous radiofrequency rhizotomy in the treatment of medically intractable trigeminal neuralgia
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2009, Vol 62, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction: Medically intractable trigeminal neuralgia (TN) causes a serious medico-economic problem, which can be solved by invasive treatment.Aim of the study: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of PRR in TN patients.Materials and methods: Between 2005-2007 forty PRRs were performed. The indications for treatment included patients with multiple sclerosis, with no changes at the MRI and MRA, and patients with identified vascular compression of the trigeminal nerve who refused microvascular decompression. After the introduction of the probe into the foramen ovale and electrophysiological identification of the trigeminal branch, ablations were performed. Results: Immediate postsurgical pain relief was noted in all the patients and persisted in the observation period from 6 to 28 months. Conclusions: PRR is a safe and effective method of TN treatment in the selected group of patients.
