Role of serotonin (5-HT)(1B) receptors in psychostimulant addiction.
Journal Title: Pharmacological Reports - Year 2011, Vol 63, Issue 6
Abstract
Psychostimulant (cocaine, amphetamine and its derivatives) addiction is an important health problem with implications in social and economic life. Although mesocorticolimbic dopamine system plays a crucial role in the mechanism responsible for the rewarding effects of these drugs, recent data also show involvement of the brain serotonin (5-HT) system. In the present review we discuss the role of 5-HT(1B) receptors in the psychostimulant addiction on the base of the effects of 5-HT(1B) receptor ligands on the behavioral effects of the psychostimulants in experimental models (sensitization, intracranial self-stimulation, conditioned place preference, self-administration and extinction/reinstatement model) used to assess their addictive properties. Moreover, the effect of long-term treatment with psychostimulants on 5-HT(1B) receptors is also discussed.

Physiology and pharmacology of melatonin in relation to biological rhythms.
Melatonin is an evolutionarily conserved molecule that serves a time-keeping function in various species. In vertebrates, melatonin is produced predominantly by the pineal gland with a marked circadian rhythm that is gov...
Purvalanol A, inhibitor of cyclin-dependent kinases attenuates proliferation of cells in the dentate gyrus of the adult rat hippocampus.
Several recent findings indicate that intensity of neurogenesis in adult brain might be regulated by enzymes involved in the cell cycle. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated whether the inhibition of cyclin-d...
Influence of fluvastatin on bone formation induced by demineralized bone matrix in mice.
In the last decade, statins became widely used drugs in hypercholesterolemia treatment. Several studies have demonstrated that statins may also be successfully administered in the treatment of osteoporosis. There are, ho...
Preclinical pharmacokinetics of radiolabelled hyaluronan.
Background: Hyaluronan (HYA) is a high molecular weight glucosaminoglycan with a great perspective for medical applications. Because HYA is widespread in the body, it is difficult to determine the fate of exogenously adm...
Long-term use of low-dose spironolactone in spontaneously hypertensive rats: Effects on left ventricular hypertrophy and stiffness.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of low-dose spironolactone initiated during the early stages of hypertension development and to assess the effects of chronic pressure overload on ventricular remod...
