ROLE OF TAMSULOSIN IN THE EXPULSIVE TREATMENT OF LOWER URETERIC CALCULUS
Journal Title: Journal of Evolution of Medical and Dental Sciences - Year 2019, Vol 8, Issue 13
Abstract
BACKGROUND Kidney and urinary tract stones have tormented humans for ages. The history of urolithiasis dates back to the dawn of civilization. Paleopathology documents their occurrence in preserved mummies throughout the world dating back 7000 years (Shattock L. 1905, Goldman et al 1990). We wanted to study the role of tamsulosin in the expulsive treatment of lower ureteral stones of up to 1 cm in size. METHODS The study was undertaken in the Department of Surgery, Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana from October 2015 to October 2016. All patients with distal ureteral calculus (as seen on x-ray kidney, ureter and bladder (KUB)/ultrasound/intravenous urography/computerized tomography (CT) scan) of size less than 1 cm, Dayanand Medical College & Hospital, Ludhiana were included in the study. RESULTS Two random groups of 35 each were made of the 70 patients who reported to the emergency. In our study, age of the patients ranged from 17 to 66 years. Majority of the patients in our series were in their second and third decades of life. Mean age of patients in the Tamsulosin group was 33.48 ±10.71 years (range 21 to 62). Mean age of patients in the Diclofenac group was 32.51 ±10.64 years (range 17 to 66). The p value was 0.705 and was not significant. CONCLUSIONS More patients in the Tamsulosin group demonstrated spontaneous stone expulsion, rapid stone expulsion and a decreased need for analgesics and hospitalization. This data confirms the positive findings of other researchers on the use of Tamsulosin in the treatment of distal ureteral stone.
