Role of Trust in Employment Contracting

Abstract

Purpose: The main goal of the article is to study the role of trust as the example of informal factors which interacts with formal rules in a special case of employment contracting. Design/methodology/approach: In order to achieve the goal of the article the following steps are undertaken: the review of trust and institutional framework definitions, the analysis of employment contracts with special consideration of relational contracts, the analysis of the role of trust. The review of literature is the research method applied to achieve the aim of the paper. The main sources of information include books as well as quality journals published in English and Polish. The New Institutional Economics approach is used to analyse the role of trust in employment relational contracting. Research and practical limitations/implications: The study is based on the theoretical analysis due to the lack of available data connected to informal institutions. Originality/value: The analysis of trust in employment contracting. Findings: Trust may play both a functional as well as dysfunctional role. According to a more complex typology four hypothetical roles of trust may be enumerated i.e.: complementary, substitutive, accommodating and competing. Paper type: theoretical paper.
