ROMANIAN-RUSSIAN POLITICAL RELATIONS BETWEEN  THE XVTH AND XVIITH CENTURIES

Journal Title: Revista Romana de Studii Eurasiatice - Year 2005, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The political relations between the Romanian Countries and Russia developed, between the XVth and XVIIth centuries, from relations, determined by the international political frame, to strong political and military alliances, with clear resposibilities on each part. Thus, while in the XVth century the political relations were based, in most cases, on matrimonial connections, in the XVIIth century written treaties were signed, even if more often, these were not carried out. If in the XVth and XVIth centuries Moldavia was the one that maintained the political connections with Russia, from the XVIIth century, Wallachia took over the initiative of diplomatic contacts with Moscow. In initiating and maintaining the political connections between the Romanian Countries and Russia Religion, the lack of military conflicts between the two sides, as well as the existence of a common enemy – the Ottoman Empire played an important role in initiating and maintaining the political connections between the Romanian Countries and Russia.
