ROMANIA’S EXTERNAL POLICY IN THE REPORTS OF THE PORTUGUESE DIPLOMAT MARTINHO DE BREDERODE

Abstract

This paper complements the previous ones with a study about the Portuguese-Romanian diplomatic relations. Walking on the footsteps of representative personalities of the Portuguese diplomacy, Martinho Teixeira Homem de Brederode de Cunha, I tried here to present the Romanian foreign policy, in the western politician view. He surprised an unstable landscape in Romania, aggravated by frequent changes of government, factionalism of parties and the transition from one party to another. The internal policy of the inter-war Romanian state obviously influenced the external policy, which Martinho de Brederode surprises in his reports sent to Lisbon.
