Romania's Position towards the 1967 Arab-Israeli Conflict

Journal Title: Codrul Cosminului - Year 2017, Vol 23, Issue 2

Abstract

The present study focuses on the way Romania decided to stand in regard to the 1967 Arab-Israeli conflict. The government in Bucharest took a number of decisions during this period which at first did nothing but to increase the degree of political isolation of Romania among the Soviet states. Gradually however, the decisions taken by Nicolae Ceausescu both during the hostilities in the Middle East and after the ceasefire, showed that the position of the Romanian state was right, and in regard to the principles of an assumed foreign policy and worthy of a sovereign state. Moreover, the attitude of the Romanian president to this issue allowed him later to assume the role of mediator of a conflict in one of the most “hot” areas in the world. The 1967 conflict was a turning point for the Bucharest administration, and Romanian diplomats knew how to exploit in the benefit of the Romanian foreign policy.
