Romania’s War Diplomacy in the First World War

Abstract
Ercüment Kuran, describes World War I, as “the unprecedented great war which was fought on the various continents of the world during the years of 1914-1918 with the belligerence of the several states divided into two blocs”. The reason for World War I’s being a total war lies behind the previous struggles among emperial powers and the certainty of the blocs that those powers constituted. Some events that took place at the beginning of the 20th century especially augmented this sharpening and divided the states into two blocs. Following to this, side of the each state was clarified and an athmosphere of conflict, that fill trigger the outbreak of a great war, began to form. World War I, became the result of this new balance and blocking and also the name of this share struggle. In this war great powers like Russia, Great Britain, France, Italy and the United States formed the Allies; while Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria formed the Central bloc. Romania was also among these states. Although declared its neutrality at the beginning of the War, both sides were willing to see Romania join in the struggle. Romania’s desire to annex the regions like Transylvania, Besarabia and Banat largely settled by Romanians made the war a likely choice. Romanians, considering the pressure from Allied and Central states, pursued a serious and profit yielding policy and observed for the most opportunate time for them. A period of observation that longed two years come to an end with the Romania’s joining to the war in August 1916. In this article, we will try to reveal the arguments of Romania’s war diplomacy.
