Root canal morphology of mandibular first premolars in western Indian population: an in vitro study

Journal Title: International Journal Of Research In Medicine - Year 2016, Vol 5, Issue 4

Abstract

BACKGROUND: To determine the root canal morphology of extracted mandibular first premolar teeth in Western Indian population using a decalcification and clearing technique. METHODOLOGY: Two hundred extracted human mandibular first premolar teeth were collected from Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and studied using decalcification and clearing technique. The root canal patterns of the teeth were determined according to Vertucci’s classification. RESULTS: The canal patterns were classified as Type I (65%), Type II (4%), Type III (15%), Type IV (3%), Type V (8%), Type VI (2%), Type VII (2%) and Type VIII (1%) according to Vertucci’s classification. CONCLUSIONS: Type I was the most prevalent root canal pattern found in mandibular first premolars amongst the Western Indian population.
