RULES FOR STUDENTS ON ADMISSION TO HARVARD UNIVERSITY FROM THE HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

Abstract
The issue of equalizing the educational opportunities of socially unprotected groups of people has a long history. Its breakthrough occurred in the 60s of the last century when in Western countries the society began to demand egalitarization in access to higher education. The article highlights the requirements for admission of students to one of the best American universities – Harvard from a historical perspective, the evolution of access to training for various social groups. Access to training at the university is available to students with a high level of knowledge. The history of enrollment in this institution is a vivid example of the existence of equality/inequality in education. Critical criteria are the selection of students (not only at Harvard University but at most of the best educational institutions) because they represent a certain type of social construction. Regardless of the rhetoric of the universityʼs power, the rules for recruiting students have an imaginary "objective character", since they contain obvious or hidden ideologies. Their goal is not only to "select" the best candidates but also to regulate access to higher education, what is the most important. Admission to Harvard indicates a high status, which can not be bought for any money, and training is a stepping stone to a career and high financial status. In this context, very often students and the university itself are accused of "narcissism". Among its graduates, there are 47 Nobel Prize winners, 32 prime ministers and presidents (on all continents), 48 Pulitzer Prize laureates.
