RUSSIAN LANGUAGE TEXTBOOK COVER AS SIGN AND VISUAL IMAGE

Abstract

The visual semiotics of the Russian language textbook cover plays an essential role in shaping students’ attitudes toward the subject and increasing their motivation to learn. The authors emphasize that the cover fulfills three primary functions: identification, motivational, and cataphoric. These functions influence students’ engagement in the educational process and their perception of the subject. The study analyzed the visual and textual elements of Kazakhstani textbooks, developed a typology of their covers, and conducted an experiment involving students and teachers. The results showed that the most effective covers feature polycodes incorporating thematic symbols, verbal, and visual previews. While teachers prefer traditional textual elements, students highly value bright, dynamic images with motivational features. The study highlights the importance of considering modern students’ cognitive characteristics when designing textbook covers, integrating national identity, interactive elements, and modern technologies. The practical significance of the work lies in the recommendations for publishers aimed at enhancing the educational and motivational potential of textbooks. This research opens new perspectives for further exploration of visual semiotics in educational literature
