„SALIENCE SYNDROME” – PROPOSAL OF RENAME DIAGNOSTIC CATEGORIES OF PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS

Abstract
The paper presents the proposal and discussion concerning the re-classifying and renaming of schizophrenia based on publication by van Os. This author proposes the diagnosis “salience syndrome” to replace all current diagnostic categories of psychotic disorders. According to him the concept of salience has central role in explaining emergence of psychotic delusions. The paper presents review of current scientific literature about version III of dopamine hypothesis of schizophrenia (2009), risk factors of schizophrenia, prevalence of positive psychotic experience in general population, and results of research on salience in psychosis with different tools – questionnaires and neuroimaging techniques. Two main diagnostic categories proposed by van Os are: salience syndrome with affective expression and salience syndrome with developmental expression.
