Saliva secretion and prevalence of some microorganisms in the oral cavity in patients with Sjögren’s syndrome

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 2

Abstract

Aim of the study: Evaluation of the relationship between salivary secretion rate and its buffering capacity and the prevalence of some microorganisms in the oral cavity in patients with Sjögren’s Syndrome (SS).Material and methods: The group of subjects, aged 23-68 yrs consisted of 45 female patients with diagnosed primary or secondary Sjögren’s syndrome. The control group included 41 women of comparable age with no medical history. The rate of secretion was tested for resting and stimulated saliva. Results: In the group of subjects with SS, a significantcorrelation between salivary secretion rate, both resting and stimulated, its buffering capacity, and the prevalence of Lactobacillus, Neisseria and Staphylococcus aureus was observed. While no significant correlation between Candida albicans and salivary secretion rate was found, negative correlation was reported in the case of Candida tropicalis, C. glabrata and C. crusei. Conclusions: Significant correlations between the salivary secretion rate, buffering capacity parameters and some microorganisms in the oral cavity were found in subjects with Sjögren’s syndrome.
