Salmonella meningitis in a 7-month old child - A case report

Abstract
Meningitis due to Salmonella Typhi is quite rare owing to inhibition by the blood-brain barrier. However,Salmonella meningitis remains a threat to young children in both developing and developed countries. We present a case of sevenmonth- old female child who presented with history offever, vomiting, diarrhoea and seizures. Child was provisionally treated as a case of bacterial meningitis on the basis of clinical history, examination and CSF report, later blood culture revealed SalmonellaTyphi spp. The patient clinical improvement on third-generation cephalosporin and was discharged. In conclusion, meningitis is a very rare and one of the severe complications of Salmonella Typhi infection, which has high morbidity and mortality in infants.
