Sanctity as a Key Philosophical Category of the Christian Discourse

Abstract

The article provides the analysis of the philosophical reflection of the category of sanctity within the Christian discourse. Among the categories that take a dominant position in the hierarchy of the categories of the religious consciousness, the category of sanctity (along with the categories of 'God' and 'Faith') is one of the basic. The thesis about the priority of the category of sanctity above the other categories of religious consciousness offered by N. Zederblom, the Swedish historian of religion and theology, was supported by many philosophers of religion as well as by the religious thinkers. Taking in consideration the current vacuum of identifications and human helplessness in the face of the destructive global tendencies, it is obvious that the phenomenon of sanctity is of a social and cultural relevance. The authors describe the connotative aspects of the "sanctity" conceptual category field, analyze the use of the term in Christian discourse, and describe the content of this category in the Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant understandings. Analysis of the concept of sanctity as a category of philosophy assumes, first of all, the definition of the scientific field of its study. Therefore, to understand the specifics of the term one can only if he is integrated in the system of religious experience. If we consider the "sanctity" as a category in the Christian discourse, then we identify a number of inherent specific connotations, pointing out the category of "sanctity" from the other spheres. Inside the Christian tradition, our study revealed absolutely polar vectors of interpreting concepts "sanctity", "saint" by the Orthodox, Roman Catholic and Protestant churches.
