Schwannoma of the tongue in a 12 year old patient - case report
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2018, Vol 71, Issue 1
Abstract
Schwannomas, also called neuromas or neurilemmomas, are rare benign nerve sheath tumours composed of Schwann cells of the peripheral, cranial, or autonomic nerves. Clinically, they manifest themselves as well-encapsulated, solitary, smooth-surfaced, and slow growing tumours. They are asymptomatic until pain or paraesthesia occur due to their growing size. The differential diagnosis should include neurofibromas, mucous retention cysts and pleomorphic adenomas. Around 25% to 48% of Schwannomas are located in the head and neck region, and most of them are intracranial. Only about 1% of schwannomas are localized intraorally, most commonly on the tongue, the palate, buccal mucosa, gums, and lips. Schwannomas occur more frequently between age 30 and 60 years, mainly in women. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice. Histopathologically, two patterns of fusiform cells known as Antoni A/ hypercellularity/ and Antoni B/hypocellularity/ are distinguished. Malignant transformation is rare.
