SCUFFING AND PITTING OF A STEEL FRICTION JOINT WITH LOW FRICTION PVD COATED ELEMENTS

Abstract

The paper presents the test results of scuffing and the surface fatigue life (pitting resistance) of the modified four-ball tester friction joint, lubricated with the following oils: RL219 reference oil, PAO 8 poly-alfa-olefin oil, GL-5 mineral oil (GL5m), and GL-5 synthetic oil (GL5s). From the material point of view, the following three combinations were tested: a friction joint with the elements made of uncoated steel, and two friction joints with steel elements with PVD low friction coatings, (WC/C (a-C:H:W), and MoS2/Ti, respectively). The obtained results indicate that the thin PVD coatings make it possible to eliminate the need of using the toxic oil additives, which are hazardous to the natural environment.<br/><br/>
