SCUFFING RESISTANCE OF FRICTION JOINTS WITH LOW-FRICTION COATED PARTS IN VARIOUS MATERIAL COMBINATIONS

Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 224, Issue 2

Abstract

The aim of the work was to investigate the effect of material combinations on scuffing resistance in heavy-loaded tribosystem with lowfriction coated parts. The low-friction a-C:H:W coating was deposited using the PVD process by reactive sputtering on steel (100Cr6) balls. The tests were performed employing a four-ball tribosystem. As a lubricant, a polyalpha- olefin base oil was used (without lubricating additives). Various material combinations were tested: steel/steel, steel/coating, coating/coating and coating/steel. The results indicate that the scuffing resistance depends on upper ball/lower balls material combinations. For coating/steel tribosystem (upper ball coated rubbing with steel uncoated lower balls) the scuffing resistance was significantly higher than for steel/coating tribosystem (uncoated upper ball rubbing with coated lower balls). The models of scuffing propagation for various material combinations, steel/steel, steel/coating, coating/coating, and coating/steel were proposed. The obtained results indicate that the most effective method for protecting tribosystem against scuffing is to coat the part less subjected to wear, then more subjected to wear or to coat all parts.
