Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2010, Vol 63, Issue 10

Abstract

Introduction: Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) is a relatively common condition with multifactorial etiology and pathogenesis.Aim of the study: To define similarities in the psychological profile of patients with BMS and Parkinson’s disease on the basis of selected psychological tests.Material and methods: The clinical examination was carried out on 83 patients divided into three groups (group I – patients with BMS, the age range 41-82 years, group II – 20 patients with PD, the age range 51-81 years, control group III – 30 patients, the age range 42-83 years). The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory psychological tests were carried out and the General Health Questionnaire GHQ-28 was evaluated. Results: Statistically significant differences between Groups III and I with regard to state anxiety and the results of GHQ-28 test were demonstrated. The differences between Groups II and I were revealed in all the examined parameters. Conclusions: Patients with burning mouth syndrome often experience high anxiety levels, and the intensity of pain sensations adversely affects the self-awareness of their health condition. The psychological disturbances in patients with Parkinson’s disease were significantly more profound than in those with BMS. The psychological profilesof both of these groups were similar and in both cases the anxiety symptoms may initiate or intensify the somatic symptoms.
