Selected subjective and contextual conditions of satisfaction with life in late adulthood. Comparative studies
Journal Title: Rocznik Andragogiczny - Year 2016, Vol 23, Issue
Abstract
Late adulthood is generally perceived as the time of loss. Results of many studies have pointed to the barriers and difficulties in realization of development potential in this period of life. Deep conviction about the irreversibility of the negative changes in mental structures taking place with time in many people results in difficulties in adaptation to this period of life and low level of satisfaction with life. The dynamic changes in the social andeconomic context in Poland over the recent decades have prompted interest in the stability of subjective and contextual conditions of the sense of satisfaction with life in the period of late adulthood. The paper presents results of comparative studies that were performed in two years 2010 and 2016. The results indicate that the elderly believe to be able to tackle the problems of old age and have satisfaction with life, although they increasingly often realize all kinds of threats for themselves, for their families, the country and the world. The negative phenomena they perceive have however no influence on their adaptation to tasks of the late adulthood or on the level of satisfaction with life. The results have revealed a particular role of optimism as a factor alleviating the potentially negative effects of the threats they perceive such as disorganization of behavior and declining level of satisfaction with life
