Separate Collection of Packaging Wastes within the Scope of Integrated Solid Waste Management: The case study of Yakutiye District in Erzurum City

Journal Title: Doğal Afetler ve Çevre Dergisi - Year 2018, Vol 4, Issue 2

Abstract

In recent years, urbanization activities have increased considerably due to the increasing population in Erzurum. This inevitably demonstrates the need for a solid waste management plan. In Erzurum province, solid wastes are collected without any separation in the properly designed landfill which was put into operation in 2007. But, rapidly growing production-consumption activities with increasing technological developments have also increased the percentage of packaging waste within municipal solid wastes. In areas where packaging waste is not collected separately, serious economic and environmental hazard has arisen. Besides, the landfill areas are considered as one of the reasons of global warming due to its greenhouse gas emission. In this study, while the situation of packaging wastes in Turkey were examined, the Packaging Waste Management Plan, which was recently implemented in Yakutiye district of Erzurum city, was discussed and the future works and the widespread effects of the project were examined for Integrated Waste Management (IWM). In this context, two regions with different socio-economic statuses were selected within Yakutiye district boundaries and the outputs of the project were determined.
