Septicaemic invasion by Shigellaflexneri

Journal Title: Scholars Journal of Medical Case Reports - Year 2017, Vol 5, Issue 7

Abstract

Shigella infections are usually restricted to the intestine. There are few reports of Shigellaisolated from the blood and most of these are from children, usually in neonates and the malnourished. In the small number of adult cases of Shigellabacteraemia which have been reported, there appears to be some kind of association with underlying disease and immunosuppression including acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. We report a case of septicaemia due to Shigellaflexneri in a 55 year old male.
