Journal Title: International Journal Of Research In Medicine - Year 2014, Vol 3, Issue 1

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasmosis is the disease caused by infection with the obligate intracellular parasite toxoplasma gondii. Both acute and chronic toxoplasmosis is responsible for the development of clinically evident disease, including lymphadenopathy, encephalitis, myocarditis and pneumonitis. Congenital toxoplasmosis is an infection of newborn that results from the transplacental passage of parasites from an infected moth er to the foetus. The objective is to study the incidence of toxoplasma infection in women with history of abortions, stillbirth in patients of S.S.G. Hospital; Vadodara. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 150 serum samples were obtained from women with bad obstetric history and 150 samples were collected from antenatal women acting as control group attending outpatient Department or admitted to wards of Obstetrics and Gynaecology department of Govt Medical College & S.S.G. Hospital Vadodara in 2003 and tested for the presences of serum immunoglobulin M (lgM) against T.Gondii by Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. RESULTS: Out of 150 samples, taken from women with bad obstetric history of which 28 patients were positive for lgM (18.66 %) and in control group it was 2%. CONCLUSION: All antenatal cases with BOH should be screened for toxoplasma antibodies that may help in proper management of cases.
