Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Pathology - Year 2018, Vol 8, Issue 3

Abstract

Background: Screening of transfusion transmissible infections among blood donors can be a cost effective approach to monitor the prevalence, distribution and trends of infections among healthy looking individuals. Aims: The present study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence of HIV, HBSAg, HCV & syphilis among blood donors of Tertiary Care Centre of Central India. Retrospective study of four years from Jan. 2014 to Dec. 2017 was done. Material and Methods: A total of 8,172 were screened samples in blood bank, among them163 were found to be positive for infections like HIV, HBS Ag, HCV & syphilis among. Blood samples were tested for the presence of HIV 1 & 2 antibodies, HBS Ag, HCVAb using commercial ELISA kits following standard protocols & syphilis was screened by Rapid Plasma Reagin type. Results: Seroprevalence of HIV, HBV (HBSAg) and HCV were observed to be HBSAg (1.04%), HCV (0.49%), HIV (0.37%) & Syphilis (0.01%) in our study among the blood donors. Transfusion Transmitted Infections were prevalent among male blood donors and in replacement donors. Conclusion: The seroprevalence of transfusion transmitted diseases in the study is very low in voluntary donors as compared to replacement donors. There was a declining trend of seroprevalence for HBSAg & HCV infection which indicates that the selection of donors is of high quality which was achieved by creation of awareness by education of prospective donor populations.
